01 - In a small mixing bowl, thoroughly blend cream cheese, unsalted butter, dill if desired, salt, and freshly ground black pepper until smooth.
02 - Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture over each slice of bread using a butter knife or offset spatula.
03 - Arrange the cucumber slices in overlapping layers on four of the bread slices.
04 - Place the remaining slices of bread, cream cheese side down, on top of the cucumbers to complete the sandwiches.
05 - Gently press each sandwich and cut into quarters, forming rectangles or triangles. Serve immediately or cover with a damp paper towel and refrigerate until served.
